The Black Mangrove, Avicennia germinans, is one of Florida's true natives. Florida's estimated 469,000 acres of mangrove forests contribute to the overall health of the state's southern coastal zone.
The Black Mangrove, along with White and Red Mangroves and Buttonwood, form a plant association which is important to a wide range of salt-water animal species. Pneumatophores or breather roots form a network collecting silt and debris and controlling erosion in the muddy saline areas. The Black Mangrove may grow to 60 feet with a trunk diameter of 2 feet.
